MOSES, MORDECAI LYON, dealer in real estate and insurance, agent of the Confederate States of America, was born August 30, 1842, at Charleston, S. C., son of Levy I. and Adeline L. (Moses), Moses, a former native of Columbia, S. C., who lived at Charleston; grandson of Isaiah and Rebecca (Phillips) Moses, of Charleston, S. C., the latter, who was born in Newport, R. I., where her English parents located on their arrival in the United States, and of Joseph and Rachel (Lyon) Moses, of Charleston, who came from Germany with Isaiah Moses in the 18th century. Mr. Moses was graduated from high school in Charleston, S. C., in 1859 and read law in the office of his brother, Joseph Winthrop Moses in Charleston. In May, 1861, he moved to Montgomery and clerked in the hardware store of Wyman, Moses & company until the organization of the forty-sixth Alabama Regiment, which he entered as a private in Capt. James W. Powell's company. Later, he was commissioned by the Confederate government for special work in Canada and the West Indies, and was so engaged in Canada at the close of the war. He returned to Montgomery in 1865, had entered the real estate and insurance business is a member of the firm of Roberts, Moses and company. On the retirement of Mr. Roberts, a firm name was changed to Moses brothers, and later the firm engaged in the banking business. He was for several years, president of the Montgomery gas and electric light Company; president of the State fair association with which he was officially connected for 15 years; president of the North Alabama land and immigration company; president of Walker county coal and mineral land company; served as president and director of several large land development companies and overall road and furnace companies. His firm built several additions to Montgomery, and with E. S. And W. S. Gordon purchased the land organized. The Sheffield land company laying off the city of Sheffield. In 1892, he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he engaged in real estate and insurance business. From 1871 -- 1875, he served as alderman of the city of Montgomery; selected to the office of mayor of Montgomery, being the first Democrat selected after the beginning of the reconstruction period. At the time of his election, the finances of the city were very disordered and depressed, taxation high, indebtedness, large, securities low, but the close of mayor Moses' third administration and of the terms of the alderman who aided him, found all that remedied, and the treasury, with funds for current needs. He is a Democrat and served several years as a member of the Montgomery County executive committee; is of the Jewish faith, and ex-president and a member of the Emanuel Lodge, independent order of B'nai B'rith, Montgomery. Mr. Lester F. ROSENBAUM - 4417 Lake Forest Drive, Kalamazoo, passed away November 17, 1971 at Bronson Hospital. Mr. ROSENBAUM was born October 18, 1892 in Kalamazoo, son of Lewis and Amanda ROSENBAUM and had been a lifetime resident here. Graduated from Kalamazoo Public Schools and the University of Michigan in 1914. Spent all his working life at the Kalamazoo Pant Company where he had achieved positions where he had achieved positions as president and chairman of the board, retiring in 1966. member of Temple Bi'Nai Isrial (sic), Kalamazoo Country Club. Surviving are: one son and one daughter, Dr. Louis ROSENBAUM, Ishpeming, Mich., Mrs. Mildred (Tood) ACKERMAN, Cambridge, Mass.; seven grandchildren; one brother, two sisters, Walter ROSENBAUM of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Norman ROSENWEIG, Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Helene RAYCE of Phoenix, Arix.; many nieces and nephews, Mr. ROSENBAUM was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, in May 16, 1966. A memorial service will be held, Rabbi Steven Steinberg officating, time to be announced. Arrangements by the Truesdale Downtown Funeral Home. A native of Kalamazoo, ROSENBAUM graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1910 and went on to the University of Michigan where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1914. Following graduation from the U of M he joined the company founded in Kalamazoo in 1867 by his grandfather, Samuel ROSENBAUM. His grandfather began business in Three Rivers prior to the Civil War, then moved to Kalamazoo. Lester succeeded his father Louis as president of the company and was named chairman of the board was named chairman of the board before his retirement in 1966, the same year his wife Rita died. He was a member of Temple B'nai Israel, the Kalamazoo County Club and for many years was active on boards and committees for the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, the Kalamazoo Art Center and the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. He was also active in the Kalamazoo Society for Crippled Children and Adults. An accomplished artist in his own right, ROSENBAUM had won national recognition for his work in both pottery and collages. Mrs. Hannah Koch - Ex-Local Resident Dies at 71, word has reached here of the death of a former Kalamazoo resident, Mrs. Alfred (Hannah) Koch, 71, who died recently in Hollywood, Fla. Mrs. Koch was the mother of James V. Rosenbaum, vice-president of Kazoo, Inc. and president of the YMCA. She lived here from 1922 to 1950. She was the daughter of Herman Friedman, proprietor of Peoples Outfitter Co., and managed her father's business during World War II. The company was subsequently sold to Leath Furniture Co. on N. Burdick Street. In additional to her husband and son, Mrs. Koch is survived by one brother, Philip Friedman of Miami, Fla; one daughter, Judy R. Hirsch of New York City and three grandchildren.
