Also, 1900 would mean that his sister Beila was born less than 9 months after his birth. NAME: Leib [Leon] Meilach. Changed name to May when came to the U.S. [Source: Family Tree drawn up by Ben Grusin and daughter, Celia, in Jan 1977.] IMMIGRATION: 28 June 1914: Leib [Leon] Meilach, age 16, occupation: clerk, with aunt and uncle, Jankel-Motel and Chana Grusin, and cousin, Czernia Grusin, arrived in Canada, port of Halifax, Nova Scotia having sailed on the steamer, SS Dvinsk, 2nd class, from Libau (now called Liepaja; SE of Riga), Latvia on 16 June 1914. Stayed on ship until it landed in New York on 29 June 1914. Did not get off in Halifax. Said he was born and his last residence was Glasmanka, province of Witebsk [Vitesk]; nationality, Russian; race, Hebrew. Height: 5'5"; eyes: brown; no distinguishing marks. Closest relative in country he came from [Latvia] was mother, B [Batsheva] Meilach. Going to Birmingham, Alabama. Closest relative in country going to is uncle, G [Gerson] May, City Paper Co., Birmingham [actually Gerson's friend, Manny Bann worked for City Paper Co. Passage paid by self. Never before in U.S. Has $50 in possession. Note: Jankel-Motel's brother and sister-in-law, Moses and Reva Grusin, were also on the ship. They stayed on the ship until it landed in New York 29 Jun1914.
