  Maria Cecil Gist of Kentucky married Benjamin Gratz (Research):AJLLJ Portrait Database 5 Aug 2011 Maria Cecil Gist married the young lawyer Benjamin Gratz in Philadelphia in 1819. Her initial excitement must have been tempered somewhat by the tepid reception she was given by Gratz's sister Rebecca. Rebecca disapproved of the marriage because Maria was Christian.      In time, however, Rebecca, the founder of Jewish education in America, warmed up to Maria and agreed "not to remember that there is a difference of opinion on any subject between us." The two became close friends and corresponded frequently.      Maria and Benjamin moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where her husband became dominant in the city's business life. Their five children were raised Christian. At forty-four in 1841 Maria passed away. [7]
