The oldest child of Moses and Rebecca Lopez, David Lopez was born into a family from Newport's Sephardic merchant class. He married his cousin Rachel Lopez, the daughter of Aaron Lopez. After the Revolution, Lopez followed his brother Aaron to Charleston, and became an auctioneer. His wife died in 1789, and four years later he remarried, to Priscilla Moses, sister of Isaac Clifton Moses. They had twelve children. The Levy brothers opened auctioning firm, followed by a store a few years later. Lopez was very active in Jewish life in Charleston. He served on the adjunta of Beth Elohim, helped collect funds for the synagogue's first ark, and served a term as parnass. [7]
