1664 Joseph Simon and his son-in-law Michael Gratz jointly owned vast tracts of land west of the Susquehanna River for almost 20 years before Simon's death, but Simon had bought and sold them in his own name. He was supposed to turn over to Michael his share of the sales or rentals after each transaction, but by the time Simon died the two men had long-standing disagreements over Michael's shares. Court judgements during Simon's lifetime were in Michael's favour. As a result, Simon left his daughter Miriam only £100, in effect completely writing her out of his will, will the proviso that if her husband Michael forgave the balance of Simon's debt, that is Michael's shares of land transactions, Miriam would share equally in her sublings' inheritance. ..... During Simon's last years he made new partnerships with sons-in-law Solomon Myers-Cohen, Solomon Etting, and Levy Phillips, men who had married his daughters Belah, Rachel, and Leah. Phillips was the executor of Simon's will, and Simon left the bulk of his estate to Leah Phillips and Belah Myers-Cohen, both of whom had large families. Smaller amounts were left for the care of his two retarded sons and his unmarried daughter, and £400 went to Shinah Simon Schuyler, who had no children. Whatever misgivings Simon may have felt about Shinah;s marriage to a non-Jew, his will did not reflect animosity - Shinah's inheritance was to go to her husband if she predeceased him. Only Miriam Gratz's family was cut out of the will, which fostered anger among the Gratz men. Source Rebecca Gratz by Dianne Ashton. Simon, Joseph (I1492)

1668 Judith was one of the earliest among the women of Shearith Israel to make a name for herself in the service of New York city. As head of the Ward Girls School No. 10 on James Street, she was the first Jewish principal of a public school in the city. The New York Sun in its issue of 15 April 1850 called her "a thorough scholar and teacher" and spoke of "the great excellence of her classes".

1685 Known to have been admitted to the religioius school of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel on September 21, 1903 at age 6 1/2, while living at 1309 N. 13th St., Philadelphia. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: New York Times Feb.8, 1916, pg. 11: Herrman-Frohsin Engagement Mr. & Mrs. Abraham Frohsin of Philadelphia have announced the engagement of their only daughter, Marguerite Frohsin, to Seymour Herrman of Morningside Avenue, this city. Mr. Herrman is a son of Mrs. Fanny Herrman Nye by a former marriage, who is well-known in club circles.. Miss Frohsin is prominent in the younger set in Philadelphia, and is an expert motorist and swimmer. The young couple plan to motor South on their honeymoon. The date of the wedding has not been set.
Frohsin, Marguerite Julia (I6150)

1686 Known to have been admitted to the religious school of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel on November 17, 1912 (age 10), while living at 2002 N. Park Ave. in Philadelphia. Born into wealthy family which lost all thier money during the depression. Raised by Nannies, and sent to a fine school in Switzerland, where he learned nothing. Joe had no marketable skills and was never able to find very lucrative employment. He was enormously fat and very sarcastic; sometimes, he was very unpleasant to be around. He and Adele befriended Ralph who was in Navy boot camp at nearby Baimbridge, Maryland, and, later, when in Navy School in Washington, DC. Ashes interred with wife, Adele Frohsin and sister-in-law, Carolyn Loeb Left no heirs; left belongings to Marjorie Loeb Batlan and Ralph Loeb, Jr.

From March 14, 2002 email from Ralph Loeb, Jr. (Adele's nephew) When Adele died, Ellen and I went to Pikesville to help Joe- one of the main things that we did was help get Adele's clothes to Goodwill, and help clean out the attic. Another couple, Joe and Adele's best friends were there also to help. In the attic we found Louella's ashes in a plain cardboard box. Joe had just left them up there and had done nothing with them. While Joe was out of the house on business, the four of us took the box to the back of the back yard. We said the Kaddish, and then dumped the ashes. We all thought it very ironic that Louella would wind up that way. You asked how Louella was able to afford a fancy apartment in New York at the time that Joe and Adele married. I have often wondered that too, but haven't a clue

1687 Known to my mother and her siblings as "Groma". Henrietta had a sister, ??? COHN, who married a man named CRAMER; they had a daughter, Tillie, and a son, Jake (who were first cousins to Louis, Menz, Goddie, etc.) Tillie married (and later divorced) a man named SELIGMAN. She was the first president of the Ladies' Auxiliary.Everyone loved her, and all called her "Aunt Tillie". For several years after her divorce from Seligman, she travelled on the road for the Henrietta Skirt Co.. She lived to be 99 1/2 years old. Cohn, Henrietta "Jetchen" (I4788)

1688 Known to my mother and her siblings as "Gropa". He was a "free thinker", and a disciple of Robert Ingersol (the famous agnostic) and Elbert Hubbard (Roycrofters, etc.). Samuel emigrated to America because of religious differences with his strict Orthodox father, Sussman (and NOT for economic or military reasons.). He sailed from Bremen, Germany, on the SS Indiana, and arrived in the Port of New York on September 23, 1857, bound for Michigan. (Ship records erroneously show his age at the time as "30"...in fact, he was 19 years old. He settled in Three Rivers, and didn't arrive in Kalamazoo until after the Civil War. He came to Kalamazoo in 1867 because his older brother, Simon, was already established there. He joined the Unitarian church in Kalamazoo in 1858 and was a life member although he much later affiliated with the Reformed Jewish Congregation for social reasons. He was naturalized as an American citizen in Kalamazoo on Friday, January 26, 1866. In early 1866, he returned to Germany with his wife, Henrietta and his son, Louis; they returned, along with daughter Caroline who was born while her parents were in Germany, on the SS America, sailing again from Bremen, and arriving at the port of New York on October 15, 1866. Samuel was a peddler for ten years, and was given a "grubstake" by either Simon or Mannes Israel to open a store in Three Rivers. When he had accumulated sufficient capital, he started the Henrietta Skirt Company (named after his wife, Henrietta Cohn ) -- later to become the Kalamazoo Pant Co. A story is told about a "George HANDLEMAN" (called "Hanselman" by all of the family), to whom Samuel loaned the money to begin the Handleman Candy Co. Consequently, every Rosenbaum family had a five pound box of candy delivered to them each Christmas.
